Canton ISD upcoming events slated

There will be a school holiday Monday, Oct. 5.

Attention sophomores and juniors -Sign up for the PSAT/NMSQT which will be given Wednesday, Oct. 14. The fee is $15 with fee waivers available for qualifying juniors. The PSAT/NMSQT is a preliminary SAT and a National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Interested students should contact educators Mrs. Dorman or Mrs. Sweat for details.

For juniors and seniors who wish to attend prom class dues must be paid before Dec. 18.

Junior dues amount to $100. For junior who pay before Dec. 18, a reduced fee of $75 is available.

Senior dues amount to $60. For seniors who pay before Dec. 18, the reduced fee is $40.

Seniors who are not attending prom can pay a reduced price of $15.

Dues will increase to $25 after the Christmas break.

Manna School Food Drive begins Oct. 1

The 2015 Manna School Food Drive is about to begin. 

Each school chooses when they would like to hold the food drive on their campus. The drive runs from Oct. 1 through Nov. 20. 

Schools who have participated in past years included Canton ISD, Edgewood ISD, Fruitvale ISD, Grand Saline ISD, Martins Mill ISD, Wills Point ISD and Pecan Ridge Day Care.

Last year winners were: Canton Elementary School – first place with 2,922 pounds; Pecan Ridge Day Care – second place 2,191 pounds collected; and Martins Mill ISD – third with 1,648 pounds. 

Manna officials said they offered congratulations congratulated to all the participating schools.  The schools all received plaques and the winners, of course, got bragging rights for the year, they said.

Democracy, Patriot essay contests gearing up

The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the VFW Auxiliary of the United

States Post 9171 of Canton are in the process of delivering the information to local schools and home-schooled youth concerning the group’s yearly essay competition.

The Voice of Democracy Essay contest is open to students in grades nine through 12. This year’s theme is “My Vision for America.”

The Patriot Pen Essay competition is for students grades in grades six through eight. Its theme is “What Freedom Means To Me.”

“This competition gives students the opportunity to compete for a scholarship and voice their opinions about democracy and patriotism,” said local VFW and Auxiliary spokesperson Diane Farmer. “These essays can also help later when they apply at colleges.”

How do you feel about 2.3 million dollars being awarded in scholarships this past year?     

If you like the idea of someone giving out $2.3 million in scholarships then you will want to enroll your child today in 4-H and start preparing them to apply for one of the many scholarship opportunities that Texas 4-H and Van Zandt County 4-H offers its members.  During the State 4-H Roundup this past June there was $2.3 million in scholarships awarded to 225 Texas 4-H Members.
