Ranger Deen

The Canton Intermediate School fifth grade classes of Paula Bruno, Amanda  Rickman and Lanette Brown were recently visited by former U.S. Army Ranger Sam Deen. Deen spoke to the classes about his service while in the Army, Ranger school and deployment in Afghanistan. He also helped the students to understand why we honor fallen soldiers on Memorial Day.

Midwestern State University

Midwestern State University recognized 916 honor students for the Spring 2015 semester. The President's Honor Roll included 293 students. Brantlee Neff of Canton was included on the president’s honor roll.

A student who completes a semester schedule of at least 12 hours in one semester with no grade lower than an “A” (4.0) will be included on the president's honor roll.


East Texas Baptist University

East Texas Baptist University has recognized its students for outstanding academic achievement during the 2015 Spring Semester with the release of the spring dean’s list with honors. The dean’s list with honors are students who have a 3.5 grade point average or above.

Pay attention kids! The schedule for the summer reading is out! Starting at 1 p.m. June 10; 10 a.m. June 12,19 and 26; and at 10 a.m. July 10,17, and 24 all children are invited to attend the fun-filled summer reading program at the Van Zandt County library.

East Texas Baptist University

Spring Commencement ceremonies for East Texas Baptist University were held on Saturday, May 2, 2015, in Baker Auditorium of the Ornelas Spiritual Life Center. Lauren Fedor of Canton received a bachelor of science in nursing.   

 


 

University of Evansville

Sarah Carlton of Canton has graduated from the University of Evansville with the degree of Bachelor of Arts.

Carlton, majoring in archaeology, graduated during UE's 157th Commencement, held Saturday, May 9 at the Ford Center in downtown Evansville.

Piano recital to be held

 The students of Myrna Ranne will be present a piano recital at 7 p.m. May 23 in the community room of the American National Bank of Canton.

Asking God’s blessing on this time will be Monte Clearman.  Guest alumni pianist will be Havilah Baucom.

The students being presented are Colton Powers, Yoan Baucom, Wilmer Baucom, Sofia Youngblood, Andrew Baucom, Callie Clearman, Elias Stroud, Ember Hilliard, Danae Baucom, Jacob Stroud, Hayley Fowler, Emily Williams and Madison Fowler.

La Pradera hosting fundraiser for Foster family

On Sept. 23, 2014, Cole Foster, now 5, was diagnosed with Stage B, Group B Burkitt Lymphoma. 

He went through months of chemotherapy treatment and completed his rounds just in time to celebrate Christmas at home.

Money is being raised to help cover his medicine and past medical bills. 

La Pradera Mexican Restaurant has agreed to donate the proceeds from its Canton location May 22 and its Wills Point location June 12 “to help this little fighter.”

Wild turkeys topic of master naturalist group’s May meeting

The East Texas Chapter of Texas Master Naturalist will meet at 7 pm. May 28 for its regular monthly meeting.   

Jason Hardin, Texas Parks and Wildlife Upland Game Bird specialist, will present the program, “Texas Turkey Talk.”  The meeting will be held in The Nature Center at 11942 FM 848 in Tyler. 

The public is invited to attend.

Hardin’s program will focus on the history of turkeys and past restoration efforts statewide, basic biology and management of wild turkeys, and future restoration efforts in east Texas.  He will also talk about the steps landowners must take to qualify property as a wild turkey release site. 

The East Texas Chapter Master Naturalist is one of 42 Texas Master Naturalist chapters throughout the state.

FFA entomology, marketing plan, livestock teams compete at state

State CDE at Texas Tech.

The spring semester is incredibly busy for all students and members of the Canton FFA Chapter are no exception. 

Throughout the spring, members have competed in various contests all over the state, including the Houston Livestock Show, McClennon County College, Tarleton State University and Stephen F. Austin State University in order to prepare for the area qualifying events, which would hopefully provide them the opportunity to compete at the state level.

Canton FFA has been represented by a Veterinary Science Team made of Allie Crossland, Katie Bateman, Matthew Delbert and Torey Valentine. 

The Horse team consisted of Mackenzie Oliver, Zayda Chavarria, Logan Nace and Taryn Maddox.

Jeremy Dickerson, Abby Sellers and Briana Cox made up the Farm Business Management team.

The Floriculture team was made of Morgan McClenney, Megan Gebauer and Lindsie Heffington.
