This week in Canton history...

CANTON HERALD,   June 23, 1949:

Saturday afternoon a lovely shower was given in the home of Dr. and Mrs. T.R. Keahey honoring Miss Julia Frances Loughmiller, whose marriage to S.E. Bering Jr., will take place in Houston, July 2. Miss Ethel Lively and Mrs. L.F. Sanders were co-hostesses. The home was beautifully decorated with spring flowers.

Miss Dorothy Funderburk presided at the bride's book, Miss Mary Beth Loughmiller at the gift book and Misses Sue Coleman, Phyllis Fugate and Jamie Loughmiller assisted at the punch bowl. Punch, dainty cheese sandwiches and cake squares were served as the guests came and departed. Mrs. Tom Prestridge entertained with several piano numbers.

Sheriff, marshal talk to Lions

Sheriff Lindsey Ray and Fire Marshal Chuck Allen shared their experience about the tornado in Van with the Canton Lions Club June 3. They told about the planning that takes place for responding to such a disaster and the fact that when a tornado or storm hits is not the time to be thinking about what to do. They praised the first responders and emergency services that worked together to keep a terrible situation from becoming worse. Lion Judge Teresa Drum presented the two with a certificate of appreciation for the informative program.

Family Auto Credit donates to yard sale proceeds to Vets Memorial

Family Auto Credit provided Dan Catania a check for $500 as the proceeds from the company’s first “Semi-Annual Amazingly Stupendous Community Yard Sale.”

"We’re pleased by the response to our first community yard sale and the ability to present this check to the Veterans Memorial,” said Christopher Inman, managing partner of Family Auto Credit. “We hope that soon the total amount needed to complete and endow our impressive tribute to veterans is finally in the bank.”

Family Auto Credit opened its doors at Hwy. 64 and I-20 last fall, and has become an active member in the Canton and Van Zandt Community. The Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial is one of the finest in the nation, Inman said, and its directors are seeking to complete the funding of a custom statue and an endowment for long-term maintenance.

Each of these students wrote an essay and were hand picked by members of Women’s League, club members said.
