TALK TO YOUR TEENS ABOUT DRIVING – THEY ARE LISTENING!

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 14-to-18 year olds in the U.S. In fact, in 2013, there were 2,614 teen (15-to-19 year old) passenger vehicle drivers involved in fatal crashes, where an estimated 130,000 were injured. Yet, a recent survey shows that only 25 percent of parents have had a serious talk with their kids about the key components of driving. Parents need to take the time to talk with their kids about the many dangers of driving, which includes alcohol, seat belts, texting, speeding, and extra passengers.

Walking With Bob

If it is going to be, it is up to me

My weight had been like a yo-yo from junior high until about age 76. In 1954, I was drafted into the US Army just after college and marriage in that order. In Japan the weight went from about 230 to 185. During the next 56 years it went up and down “Big Time.”  In the 70s it went from about 256 down to 185 and back up again. I wrote “Give up the Fat, The Diet Fat to Fit Work Book. “  I did the radio and book signing scene, hit the speaking circuit, started gaining back the pounds, took the dumb book off the market and back to being fat I went.

In the mid-90s my health took a new twist. I ran out of energy, could not sleep well at night and started to doze off during the day. I got fired once for sleeping on the job. The blood pressure went to 204 over 105. All the fad diets were failing me. The powerful pills were not helping. Every quick fix diet was failing faster.

God’s Healing Power

The power of God is unlimited

No matter on earth or in space

He always moves into action

When faith takes its holy place

Faith is the answer with His love

His heart is touched when we grieve

Miraculous things are in place

From the moment our hearts believe

Believing is the eternal answer

There is nothing our savior doesn’t do

When we cry out in faith to Jesus

Old Satan’s temptations are through

His power is limited to tempting

Don’t ever believe his lies

When Jesus comes to get us

His future in eternal fire lies

This week in Canton history...

Canton Herald Oct. 27, 1949:

School burglaries solved with arrest of gang operating in several states; in Canton jail.   Seventeen Texas robberies were cleared last week with the arrest of two Dallas men and one from Oklahoma.  The men, Donald Hunter of Oklahoma City, Joseph Roland Brown of Dallas and James A Benson of Dallas are being held in the jail in Canton charged with burglary and theft over $50. Brown and Benson are ex-convicts having served previous time in the penitentiary.

Clyde Elliott and his deputies were greatly responsible for the arrest of the men who have admitted robbery of six sewing machine heads from the Grand Saline public school on Sept. 18. Recovery of the Grand Saline machine has not been made, Sheriff Elliott told the press, but compensation is expected soon from a St. Louis buyer of these stolen machines.

Why

Why is a word for every season

We wonder what to do

If we do not search for answers

Peace on the earth is through

Why do we celebrate Christmas

The time of a baby’s birth

The reason for our rejoicing

Our precious savior come to earth

Why do we celebrate Easter

And why does Satan rave

The reason for this special season

Our Jesus came alive from the grave

Why did He go back to Heaven

He went to prepare a place

For we who will believe

Of the Precious human race

Don’t allow the small word why

To give your heart a shove

For the answer from God himself

Is another world called LOVE

Come browse at the VZC Library

It still feels like summer, but the ads and the stores are beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

It is not too early to begin making Christmas stockings, or sewing designer clothes for a child’s favorite doll.

Suggestions for crafts, jellies, relishes, and other “make ahead” gifts may be found at the Van Zandt County Library.   Recipes for special baked goods are available also.

The library staff will be dressed in their favorite Halloween costumes at 10 a.m. Oct 30, for Storytime.  Come say “Boo” to them.   Children may dress up if they wish.

The Acer Notebook and American Girl Doll raffle is coming to a close.  Don’t miss out.

Political campaigns begin so far ahead of party conventions that it is easy to get disgusted with them, and ignore the whole procedure.

The library has books by and about many of the candidates that will help decision making in this important election year.

This week in Canton history...

Oct. 20, 1949:

The City of Canton has taken on a “new look” so far as its streets are concerned. Commissioners Buster Brown and Eddie Guinn have just about completed oiling, asphalting and graveling about three or more miles of our streets.

We can now boost of the best streets of any town in Texas of the same size.  The cost of this work to the city was very small in comparison to the total cost of the streets. Let’s take our hats off to these two gentlemen that were so willing to help Canton improve its streets.  I believe that the citizens of Canton will long remember you for this good work.  “A good way for the citizenship to show its appreciation for this work will be for them to pay their city taxes early so the city can pay its portion of the cost of these new streets,” said G. H. Hilliard Mayor

Walking With Bob

As the sun peeks through the trees, I finish running in place for 30 seconds, take and blow out a big breath, yawn, push START on my running app and it is a go. I have started every day since June 12, 2006 with a brisk walk. I will walk two miles in less than 40 minutes this morning as I do almost every day. Rarely do I walk less than 40 minutes and about every three months I will do a 5K (3.1 miles.)

The weather determines what I wear. Cold weather demands dressing in layers, rain demands putting on rain gear and hot weather lets me wear only what modesty demands. It is a no brainer. I have gloves, ear muffs, and scarfs in a sack that is handy.
