To Please the Lord

To please the Lord, What can we do?

There are ways His word make clear?

To love your neighbor as I love you

Will keep my love and spirit near.

To sing and praise each Sabbath day.

The power of Father God’s seek

Then joy and happiness will be yours

Not just one day but all the week.

Jesus says follow me each day

I will make you fishers of men

My precious blood will clean you

And take away all your sin.

Jesus says just love and serve me

Each day from eleven to eleven

To please me in this special way

Prepares your reward eternity in Heaven.

Library to celebrate building

Looking back on achievements and mistakes is a valuable way to improve most situations.   Library Director, Susie Pulley, will revisit the beginnings of the Van Zandt County Library, the strides that have been made in some 60 years, and plans for the future at the regular Friends of the Library meeting, at 10 a.m. Monday Sept. 14.  The date also marks the 23rd anniversary of the dedication of the present building.

Friends of the Library dues are only $10 a year.  They are due now for the 2015-‘16 year.   Life memberships are still available.

Storytime for infants through pre-school children will resume at 10 a.m. Sept. 4.  The schedule through December is available at the library or on Facebook.

Life is like ice cream ... enjoy it before it melts

Canton Place Senior Living is inviting the community to an ice cream social at 2 p.m.
today (Thursday, Aug. 27) at both its Mulberry and Pine residences located at 1835 and 1833 S. Trade Days Blvd.

Country Place Senior Living of Canton Pine, Mulberry provides scoop

We all know America loves ice cream.  In fact, 87 percent of Americans have ice cream in their freezer at any given time and 48 is the average number of ice cream pints an American enjoys each year.

So yes, we all scream for ice cream! And don’t think it stops with humans – one in five people share their ice cream with their pet!

So, of course, we indulge our sweet tooth every now and again with a scoop (or three.) And you can have fun piling on the toppings to make it even better (as if ice cream wasn’t enough of a treat.)  But all of this yummy goodness can pile up on the calories and fats.

The older we get, the fewer taste buds we have. So many of our seniors would live on a diet of candy and ice-cream if they could.

The Word of God

The word of God speaks clearly

While on this earth we trod

If we say I have never sinned

We are denying the word of God

As we search the Holy Scriptures

Many words do not rhyme

But tells the way to salvation

If we will only give them time

The greatest secret of them all

Is not secret at all

Trust Jesus Christ the Son of God

Or then forever fall

We may think good work will do

Through them we may see God’s face

But the only item in the world

Is the blood of Jesus and God’s grace

Throwing Public Education under the Bus

Today’s fee frenzy is a race to nowhere.

Public education used to be, you know, public — an essential societal investment for the betterment of all, paid for by all through school taxes.

In addition to privatization schemes to turn education over to corporate profiteers, public schools themselves have steadily been shifting from free education toward what amounts to fee education. This is a product of the budget slashing frenzy imposed on our schools in the past 15 years or so by the convergence of Koch-headed, anti-public ideologues and unimaginative, acquiescent education officials

Preserving our hunting heritage in wake of disease

‘The wildlife and its habitat cannot speak. So we must and we will.’ ~ President Theodore Roosevelt

We have long known certain deer breeding practices threaten native wildlife and hunting on a number of levels and the movement of captive deer around the state in livestock trailers creates significant risk to our wild deer population.

Walking With Bob

Fuel for the belly

I am out of bed by 4 a.m. every day. There is no logical reason except I am punished for being 39 years old for the last 44th time. That is OK because being 39 is more fun than being 83.

This is how the day goes most of the time. Out of bed around 4 a.m., to the kitchen and putting together a protein milkshake with some fresh or frozen fruit, almond milk, ice, a dab of peanut butter, five taps of a cinnamon spice, and my favorite powder with 20 grams of protein. I read, study, plan, pray and snooze till daylight. On go my running socks, dress for the weather, on with the running shoes and out the door.

I walk briskly at more than three miles an hour for about 40 minutes to get that heart rate up. During the “brisk walk,” I mentally plan where I will go and what I will do this “first day of the rest of my life.”
