Trinity Valley Community College conferred degrees on 228 students during commencement ceremonies held Friday, Aug. 18 at Cardinal Gym, the largest August graduation class ever. There were 138 associate degrees and 90 certificates of completion were awarded.

Canton students graduating were Bradly C. Brown, certificate; Cody L. Easley, Associate of Arts; Lindsey D. Grace, Associate of Arts; Courtney M. Mangum, certificate; Taylor A Phillips, certificate and Jacob M. Watson, certificate.

The Canton FFA Chapter was recognized as a gold-level chapter for the esteemed Golden Horizon award in the multi-teacher division at the 89th annual Texas FFA State Convention held July 10-14 in Corpus Christi.

The gold-level Golden Horizon award is the highest state rating to be bestowed upon a Texas FFA chapter. Golden Horizon award selection is based on exceptional chapter involvement and activities within the school and community.

The Golden Horizon award recognizes well-rounded chapter involvement that promotes maximum participation and achievement in order to deliver all facets of the agricultural education program.

I have spilled barrels of ink in columns on the joys of being a teacher but now some ink needs to be spilled to get educators the help we need. Along with other school employees and retirees, we are facing a nightmare. And that is why 800 educators packed the front lawn of the Gregg County Courthouse recently in the "Use Your Teacher Voice!" Rally.

Registration for all students will be come and go on Aug.8-9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 6 p.m. in the Canton High School Commons area.

 Schedules for the new school year will be distributed only after all registration materials have been completed and signed by a parent or guardian and all fees and fines from last year have been cleared.  

All registration forms will be available online at http://hs.cantonisd.net  and at the high school office beginning Aug. 3.   All students must provide proof of residency in the form of a current utility bill or lease agreement.  If you are not accompanying your student to registration, you must send proof of residency and all completed and signed registration forms for your student to receive his/her schedule.

Stephen F. Austin

The following students from Canton have been named to the dean’s list at Stephen F. Austin State University for the spring semester: Shelby Coursey, Human Sciences; Dakota Holleman, Nursing; and

Mikayla Martin, Interdisciplinary Studies.

To be eligible for this honor, a student must be enrolled in 12 or more semester hours and maintain a grade-point average of 3.5.
