CES October Student Council members named

Canton Elementary announces the October student council. The students are Kate McClendon, Linley Houchin, Navaeh Castillo, Brady Clower, Maggie Roach, Aiden Norrell, Rylan Broyles and Clive Bilberry.

“The CES Student Council helps us greet students daily, assists the office at special programs, works on community or school projects,” said Elementary Principal Kelly Lamar.

CHS credit by exam registration opens

School Counselor Prissy Sweat announced that credit by examination registration has open.

“Any student in grades 9-12, may register to take exams for courses in which they have received prior instruction but did not receive credit or to earn credit for academic courses for which they have had no prior instruction,” Sweat said.

The deadline to register for Credit by Examination is Oct. 17. Counselor Sweat said that registration forms are available in the counseling office at Canton High School.

The following students received degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University during August commencement exercises: Meredith L Wiley, of Canton, Master of Education, EDLE - Educational Leadership, James I. Perkins College of Education; Ashton Lea Wood, Bachelor of Science, HADM - Hospitality Administration, James  I. Perkins College of Education.
 


Harding University 

Emily Nicks of Canton has been selected as a 2016-‘17 member of the Harding University Jazz Band. Nicks plays a wide variety of styles with the group including blues, swing, bop, Latin and fusion. Improvisation is taught as part of the jazz curriculum, and each student is given the opportunity to improvise in rehearsal and performance and is encouraged to write arrangements and hear them performed.

Van Zandt County 4-H Members bring home gold, silver, other honors

Van Zandt County 4-H members may not be participating in this year’s Olympics in Rio but they certainly did bring home the gold.

Members and volunteer leaders were recently recognized for their achievements for the 2015-2016 4-H year.

The evening began with a catered meal and power point that reflected upon all the 4-H members in the county and their many adventures with their projects and achievements.

The recognition ceremony began by recognizing the scholarship winners who earned local Van Zandt County 4-H Scholarships.

Thanks to the Van Zandt Extension Education Association an additional scholarship in the amount of $500 was added this year. This year’s honors went to seniors Colton Caughron and Sabrina Swinford.

Colton, of Wills Point, is a home-schooled senior and was an active member of shooting sports. Colton received the VZ 4-H Scholarship $1,000 and the Bobbi Rogers Scholarship $750 earning a total of $1,750 in scholarships.

VFW sponsors essay scholarship contest

The Canton Veterans of Foreign Wars and their Veterans Auxiliary of Post 9171 are once giving local schools a chance to enter the national essay competition.

“This is a chance to offer students a head start on their lives,” said spokesperson Diane Farmers. “It also is an opportunity for the junior high and high school students to voice their opinions on patriotism, American history and democratic ideas and principles.”

The contest is open to all students in public, private or parochial schools or pursuing home study.

The essay for students in grades six through eight is called the Patriot's Pen. This year’s theme is "The America I Believe In."

The Voice of America contest in grades nine through 12. The theme for this year is "My Responsibility to America."
