Canton Masons award scholarships

Aug. 8, Canton High School graduates Emily Nicks, Mason Baugh and Riley Killingsworth were each awarded at $1,000 scholarship by the Masons of Castillian Lodge No. 141.

After dinner, Master of the Lodge Mac Walling and Secretary Michael King presented the awards in a brief ceremony.

These worthy students were chosen by the lodge on the basis of their high school achievements, demonstrated academic abilities, extracurricular activities and moral character.  The scholarships will help these students pursue their life goals, lodge officials said.

Emily was valedictorian of Canton High School and graduated with a 4.0 grade point average.  Active in the Mighty Eagle Band, she was drum major and All-state Band in trumpet.  She was in the State UIL Academics and a national speech and debate qualifier.  She will major in public Relations and minor in theatre at Harding University in Searcy, Ark.

Making the delivery were Masons, from left, Michael Bowman (junior warden,) Josh Wintters (senior deacon,) Mac Walling (master) and Jeff Lawley (district deputy grand master.)

On Aug. 6, brothers of Castillian Lodge No. 141 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, partnered with the Canton Citizens National Bank and other anonymous donors to contribute 10 backpacks filled with school supplies for the Canton Elementary School.

Master of the Lodge Mac Walling presented the donation on behalf of the Brethren. Deanne Callan, Citizens National Bank Banking Center manager, presented the backpacks on behalf of the bank.  Jeff Lawley (District Deputy Grand Master), Michael Bowman (Junior Warden) and Josh Wintters (Senior Deacon) were also present from the Lodge.

CES Principal Kelly Lamar accepted the supplies.

This is the third year of the Castillian Lodge “Back-a-Kid” program.  The program began to meet a need in the Canton Elementary School, lodge officials said, because many children begin school without supplies and many transfer into the school in mid-semester.

What’s all the BUZZ at CJH?

Free State Master Gardener Bob Williams teaches students Audrey Thelen and Eve Dial how to properly plant.

Changes have been occurring in the front landscape of Canton Junior High School over the past couple of years and we aren’t finished yet!

The seventh grade science classes have been working alongside the Van Zandt Master Gardeners to create an educational butterfly garden. It’s a garden with a purpose!

Imagine living in a world without flowers or fruit or even coffee or chocolate for that matter. Thanks to the wonderful work of pollinators like bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, much of the food we eat and flowers and plants we enjoy are made possible.

Despite the importance of pollinators, they are taken for granted all too often. Worldwide, there is an alarming decline in pollinator populations due to excessive use of pesticides and an ever-expanding conversion of landscapes to human use.

Band begins with plans to continue success

The Mighty Canton Band is now back into full swing with summer camp taking place everyday until school starts.

The band is looking forward to another exciting year with their show entitled "Into the Light," which features classical music by Mozart, Debussy, Shostakovich and Copland, said Eagle Band Director Mike Bartley.

“The band hopes to continue with the success of their past by entertaining audiences at the football games, finishing at or near the top at marching contests, and making a trip to San Antonio in November for the UIL State Marching Contest,” Bartley said.

The Mighty Canton Band has enjoyed recent success by having one of its concert pieces from their spring musical program make it to the State level of the Outstanding Performance Series competition. The Band also had its entire spring musical program make it to the State level of TMEA Honor Band competition.
