Canton singers bring home top marks

The Canton High School Choir took 23 students to compete at the TSECC competition in Austin May 39 and came homr with a total of 15 Division 1 ratings.

Division 1 is the highest rating a student singer can achieve in this competition.

The group also earned 12 Division 2 (excellent) awards and three Division 3 (good) ratings.

Some of the students competed with a solo, ensemble, and some did both a solo and ensemble, Choir Director Angela Russell said.

“We are proud of all the choir students hard work,” Russell said. “The competition is very difficult at the state level and our students represented Canton well!

Thank you to our administration for funding our students and parents for chaperoning and supporting our choir program! We could not have done it without your financial and encouraging support!”

Rotary Club Scholarships awards scholarships

The Rotary Club of Canton awarded $17,000 in scholarships to area graduating seniors. Their annual scholarship awards luncheon was held May 19,at the Farm Bureau.

The students, their families and school administrators along with the members of the Rotary Club  enjoyed a barbecue lunch followed by the awards. Also honored were the Teachers of the Year from each Canton ISD campus.

Hannah Atkinson received a Bachelor of Science, Human Services from James I. Perkins College of Education, Stephen F. Austin State University during May commencement exercises.


Lauren Cliburn of Canton was honored at the Southern Arkansas University Spring Commencement on May 6, 2016.

Cliburn was a nursing major and graduated from the College of Science and Engineering with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

Cliburn and the other recent SAU graduates now have the college degree with the highest return on their investment from any Arkansas institution of higher education, according to the U.S. Department of Education. For more information, visit www.SAUmag.edu.

Fall junior high registration dates set

Canton Junior High has announced the dates for fall registration.

All sixth, seventh and eighth grade students can register between 8 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Aug. 4  or 9 in the junior high library.

According to school officials, it will take about one hour to complete the required paperwork, have textbooks issued and get lockers assigned.

To register, students must be in dress code (with appropriate haircuts) according to the CJH handbook and Canton ISD Code of Conduct, school officials said.

The registration process must be completed before a student can receive his or her class schedule.

Additionally, all students must have current immunizations on file prior to the start of school.

Wharton earns nursing degree

Rebecca Wharton of Canton has earned a Bachelor of Science Nursing degree from the University of Saint Mary.

Saint Mary’s is located in Leavenworth, Kan.

Faglie finishes LeTourneau

Savanna Faglie

Bill and Terry Faglie of Canton would like to announce the graduation of their daughter, Savanna Lee Faglie, from LeTourneau University. 

Savanna graduated with a Bachelor of Science in engineering, civil concentration, honors college.

She is the granddaughter of the late Ben and Imo Lee Faglie of Canton and the late Johnnie and Helen Colburn of Fort Worth.

Canton FFA wraps up year with 79th annual awards banquet

FFA Officer Team included: President – Ryan Todd, Vice President – Jeremy Dickerson, Secretary – Katy Berry, Treasurer – DJ Spencer, Reporter – Erin Bourquin, Sentinel – LauraFussnecker, and Student Advisor – Evie Davis.

May 13, the Canton FFA Chapter held its annual banquet and awards celebration in the commons area of Canton High School. 

Approximately 200 members, parents and supporters were on hand for a meal sponsored by the Canton FFA Booster Club and catered by the Canton High School Culinary Arts Department. A cake auction to benefit the Canton FFA Booster Club followed the meal, and generated more than $1,100. 

When the student awards portion of the banquet began, 49 students were awarded the Greenhand FFA Degree.

Katy Berry and Evie Davis were awarded the Star Greenhand award, symbolizing the most outstanding first year Canton FFA members. Each of these young ladies has also received this award at the district level, and will soon have the opportunity to compete for Area 6 FFA honors.

VZC Retired Teachers present Wilson with scholarship

The Van Zandt County Retired Teachers presented a scholarship to Kaitlyn Wilson of Canton May 17.

Wilson plans to attend the University of North Texas with plans to become a teacher.

Wilson, center, was joined by CHS geometry teacher Pam Chastain, left, and CHS Counselor Susie Dorman upon acceptance of her scholarship.

Nicks Awarded Scholarship

Canton resident awarded Trustee Scholarship to Harding University

Emily Nicks of Canton received a Trustee Scholarship to Harding University, amounting to eight semesters of full tuition.

Nicks is one of 27 Trustee Scholars who will be freshmen at Harding this fall.

To be considered, candidates must score at least a 31 on the ACT or 1360 on the SAT and must have a 3.5 or higher high school grade point average.

Other areas of academic achievement, leadership and extracurricular involvement are also taken into account, and candidates are interviewed by a selection committee at the university.

Nicks will also be considered for admission into the honors scholars program.
