Fifth grade students at Canton ISD recently made an American flag out of handprints as an auction item for the Canton Education Foundation annual gala. The Celebration of Stars Gala will be held Saturday, April 8 at the Canton High School.
The Grand Ole Opry presented by Humana showcases talented students through their Music City Performance Program. Canton High School was welcomed by the Grand Ole Opry and its’ patrons prior to the March 11 performance.
The Music City Performance Program gives students an amazing performance experience at one of the nation’s iconic music establishments. “Being able to showcase talented students from across the country is very rewarding and fosters excellence in their musical development curriculum” said Wayne Chandler, Director of Sales, GOO Entertainment Group.
Canton High School Choir performed for20 minutes prior to attending the world’s longest running radio show. In addition to performing, they received a commemorative performance poster and recognition during the Grand Ole Opry Performance.
Hannah Hubbard of Canton, science major at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, was named on the dean’s list of Academic Honors and the President’s Honor Roll for the Fall 2016 semester.
To be named on the dean’s list, a student must have achieved a 3.5 or greater grade point average for the semester.
Canton Junior High Choir has been busy this year. Forty seventh and eighth grade students participated in the Solo and Ensemble in October 2016, with 29 of them getting a superior score. On Feb. 23, 20 sixth graders participated in SoloFest at the CJH and received Superior scores.
Canton is in a new Region, which is very tough, but one of our seventh graders, Cathrine Hook, made it into the All-Region choir.
The Canton Junior High Choir is performing in the Region 3 UIL Concert and Sight-Reading competition on Tuesday, April 4.
A spring concert will be held Monday, May 1. We would like to invite the public to come out and watch the choir perform.

ATPE brings hundreds of educators to State Capitol
Several Canton teachers joined more than 400 educators with the Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE) at the Capitol, Monday. They discussed with lawmakers important education issues, such as opposing school vouchers, funding an equitable solution to fully funding public education, and providing affordable healthcare options for public school employees.

Brookshire Grocery Company tannounced the recipients of the 2017 FRESH 15 Scholarship. Now in its second year, the FRESH 15 Scholarship Program is designed to recognize local high school seniors for their athletic and academic achievements.
The scholarship winners are Matthew Anderson of Robert E. Lee High School, Taylor Marshall of Canton High School, Mary Claire Neal of Robert E. Lee High School, and Carlos Villapudua of Robert E. Lee High School.

The Canton ISD Board of Trustees met Feb. 7 to approve and consider a number of topics. Those were:
—Approved the 2017-‘18 Canton ISD Cheerleader/Mascot Constitution for the Canton High School and Canton Junior High. Along with minor changes, the cheerleading squads will now be able to have 16 cheerleaders instead of 12.
—The board approved to call the school board trustee general election along with a joint election agreement with the City of Canton for the May 6,2017, school board election.
—The board approved a contract for election services between Canton ISD VZC Clerk Pam Pearman for the May 6 school board election.
Motasem Alshomali and Mikayla Martin, both of Canton, have been named to the president’s list at Stephen F. Austin University for the fall semester.
To be eligible for this honor, a student must be enrolled in 12 or more semester hours and maintain a grade-point average of 4.0.
