Court hears overtime pay report

During its regular meeting Dec. 26, the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court heard a report from their appointed committee regarding recommendations made in an audit by the U. S. Department of Labor regarding overtime pay in the VZC Sheriff’s Department.

VZC Human Resource Director Dan Maucieri gave the report to the commissioners’ court on behalf of the committee that was appointed by VZC Judge Don Kirkpatrick Dec. 12.

A large crowd of Van Zandt County Pct. 2 citizens were among those that attended the regular meeting of the VZC Commissioners Court Dec. 26.

Due to the large turnout, the meeting was moved upstairs to the VZC District Courtroom in the VZC Courthouse.

Nine citizens signed up to speak about concerns they had regarding a planned solar plant construction project located between the Whitton and Jackson communities.

​​​​​​​GriefShare classes to  begin Jan. 6

For those who have experienced the death of a loved one, a GriefShare program will be held at First Baptist Church of Canton.

This nondenominational program features Christ-centered, biblical teaching that focuses on grief topics associated with the death of a loved one.

The DVD seminar features nationally respected grief experts and real-life stories of people, followed by a small group discussion about what was seen on the DVD.

Openings in the 2019 East Texas Master Naturalist Classes are filling fast.  Spaces are limited, and applications are due now for the classes. Classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., Jan. 22, at the Tyler Nature Center, 11942 FM 848, Tyler, TX 75707.

Heating/AC maintenance bids rejected by commissioners’ court

 

Two bids received concerning heating and air conditioning maintenance for the Van Zandt County Jail, Courthouse and Courthouse Annex were rejected by the VZC Commissioners Court during its regular meeting Dec. 12.

VZC Auditor Sandy Hill presented bids from Absolute Air in Kaufman County and Consolidated Refrigeration Technology in Dallas to the commissioners’ court for their consideration.

Concerns raised about solar plant construction project in Pct. 2

 

Around 150 citizens in Van Zandt County Pct. 2 packed the Whitton Community Center Dec. 17 to receive information and ask questions about a solar plant construction project located between the Whitton and Jackson communities.

According to information released by a citizens organizational group founded by VZC Pct. 2 citizen David Dunagan known as Save Van Zandt County, residents living between Whitton and Jackson discovered that a German and Romanian group has leased 964 acres stretching 2.5 miles between the two communities to install an industrial size solar generation plant.

The heat of hot air balloon propane lighters warmed up the crowd during the Canton Christmas Parade held Saturday, Dec. 15. The parade was rescheduled due to inclement weather, but still attracted large crowds. The parade was filled with characters such as the Grinch, Santa Claus and Snoopy.
