In the last Canton ISD school board meeting Dec. 17, trustees took time to honor the Canton High School Mighty Band for winning the state championship.
“Its always an honor to be able to go to state competition,” said CISD Superintendent Jay Tullos, “but, we didn’t just go. We went and won the state championship. You brought home the gold.” School board members praised the band’s success and also Mike Bartley, director of the band.

Friends, family and the VZC Library Advisory Board and Friends of the Library threw VZC Library Director Susie Pulley a surprise party Nov. 29.

Decked out in hot pink T-shirts with “Team Susie,” emblazoned on the front, friends and family of Van Zandt County Library Director Susie Pulley came together to throw a surprise party at the VZC Library Nov. 29.
Mrs. Pulley has been fighting cancer for 18 months and is currently undergoing treatment. Even with the obstacles that fighting cancer throws in front of a person, Mrs. Pulley still has a bright, positive outlook on life and a smile for whomever needs it. Her daughter, Stacy Pulley, wrote a speech that VZC Library Board President Richard Briley read to those in attendance.
Canton will see a new option for take out when Panda Express opens its doors in Spring 2019. The restaurant will be along the Interstate 20 frontage road, where Burger King was at previously. Demolition work has already begun, and the old Burger King is now torn down. Panda Express will offer “American-Chinese food fresh from the wok.”
A structure fire in the 1200 block of Woodland Street in Canton brought the Canton Fire Department, South Van Zandt and Whitton Volunteer Fire Department on scene to extinguish the blaze. The fire started around 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 and took approximately three hours to put out. Canton Police Department and Champion EMS were also on scene. As of presstime, no other information was available, and the fire remains under investigation.
A short agenda was taken care of quickly as the regular meeting of the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court Nov. 28 lasted less than 10 minutes.
Forfeiture funds from the VZC District Attorney’s office to the following agencies for the VZC DA’s office shootout competition were approved by the commissioners’ court: Van Police Department, $1,300; Canton Police Department, $500; VZC Sheriff’s Department, $200; and the Texas Department of Public Safety, $850.
Ida Mae’s Store House Emergency Food Pantry, located at 28096 W. Hwy. 64, Canton, will have a Grand Opening from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Dec. 7. Refreshments will be served.
Lakeside Baptist Church will host Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University seminar. The nine-week course provides families and individuals with practical tools to gain control of their finances and set themselves up for long-term financial success.
The course meets once a week where a different lesson is taught by Dave on DVD followed by a small-group discussion.
The Van Zandt Country Club is hosting a “Wine, Dine and Shop” Toy Drive event from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13.
“The Toy Drive is just one small way to bring Christmas to hundreds of children in Van Zandt County through our local Child Advocacy Center and Child Welfare Board,” said organizers.
