The Canton Eagles got their first taste of District 14-4A play last week, taking on the Mabank Panthers in a matchup of teams that each qualified for the playoffs following the 2017-'18 season.
Mabank would ultimately prevail in a tightly contested contest, narrowly edging the Eagles 34-31.
Neither team could make much headway on the scoreboard in the opening quarter with the Panthrs taking a 5-2 lead after eight minutes of play.
Twin sisters Daphine Freeman and Maxine Corey have spent a lot of time together throughout their lives and at age 90, they are continuing to do so as roommates at Canton Oaks nursing home.
Daphine and Maxine were born Oct. 20, 1928, and raised in the Jackson Community before attending school in Jackson under Van Zandt Public Schools through the eighth grade.
Prior to their freshmen year in high school, they attended Canton High School where they both graduated in 1946.

The public meeting scheduled for the Whitton Community Center at 7 p.m. Thursday (tonight) regarding the proposed solar construction project between the Jackson and Whitton communities will be held without a major player.
According to Save Van Zandt County Founder David Dunagan; Pattern Development, the company that is involved in the project, will not be in attendance.
The yearly grind of local election cycles began this week as the filing period for positions on the Canton City Council and Canton ISD Board of Trustees opened Jan. 16.
The filing period will run for approximately one month, closing Feb. 15 for both entities.
During a retirement reception for Kathy Jackson held Dec. 12, Van Zandt County Judge Don Kirkpatrick remarked that if you need to know anything about the VZC Courthouse, she would be the person to go to first.
After 33 years working in a number of different roles in the courthouse, Jackson entered retirement effective Dec. 31, 2018.
Van Zandt County’s elected officials were officially administered the oath of their respective offices during the 2019 Inauguration Ceremony held at the Van Zandt County Courthouse Jan. 1. Families, friends and dignitaries came to witness new judges being sworn in with a few familiar faces returning to their benches.
Amid a packed district courtroom, 13 VZC officials were administered the oath of office during the standing-room only event.
Congressman Lance Gooden took the official Oath of Office on Thursday to join the 116th Congress along with 100 other newly elected representatives. Congress immediately took up votes to fund the government, with dispute over funding for a border wall at the center of the debate.
Regarding funding for a border wall, Congressman Gooden stated, “I campaigned for over a year and my constituents all say they want meaningful border security. They are prepared to stand with me as long as it takes to stand with the president. I cast my first vote in Congress to follow through on that promise.”
Another public meeting on the subject of a proposed solar construction project between the Jackson and Whitton communities has been scheduled, according to information released in an e-mail by the Save Van Zandt County citizens organization.
The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Whitton Community Center as representatives from Pattern Energy will be on hand to show plans and answer questions about their proposed project in the area.
