Chairman of the VZC Veterans Memorial Board Ron Carroll accepts a $650 check from Kelly Chastain. Chastain is the owner of Boot Hill Restaurant and Dockside Cottages located on the top of the Hill across from Canton Trade Days. Chastain’s business has been collecting donations in a boot located on her counter from all her patrons which began in June and ran through Nov. 4. This year was the inaugural event and plans are to continue with the event in 2019 and beyond, said Chastain. All donations collected were divided between the VZC Veterans Memorial and PTSD USA's Camp Hope in Houston “We would like to thank all of our customers and veterans. You all have a heart of gold,” said Chastain.
In October, the Wednesday Study Club members traveled to Lindale to see the Lindale Community Theater’s mini-production of the off-Broadway hit “Love, Loss, and What I Wore.”
“The members thoroughly enjoyed the presentation based on the book by Ilene Beckerman,” said a club spokesperson.
The five characters relate important events in their lives, using clothing and accessories and the memories they trigger to tell their stories.
The annual community Christmas Open House hosted by the Canton Museum Executive Board is scheduled at the Blackwell House Museum from 3 to 6 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 6.
Located on First Monday Lane adjacent to the Van Zandt County Library, the house has the historical distinction of being the oldest home in VZ County.
Members of the Canton Fire Departmentare set to kick off the fire fighter’s annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) find urgently needed treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases that severely limit strength and mobility.
More than 20fire fighters from the Canton Fire Departmentwill fan out across the city with boots in hand for this year’s drive, Aug. 31- Sept. 2.
Tommy Phillips, Ag Agent and Melisa Rhodes, FCH Agent, presented this year’s “Forever 4-H Friend Award” to a local business that has continually supported 4-H youth ever since their doors opened for business.
“The 4-H Forever Friend Award honors Chicken Express of Canton and Manager Fred Aldrige for their continued support of the Van Zandt County 4-H program,” said the agents.
“Chicken Express has been a great friend to 4-H providing their famous sweet tea for 4-H and Extension programs.
It is time to “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” at the Van Zandt County Library as the preschoolers will be listening to Ms. Rhonda read stories about America's pastime, baseball. Storytime will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, May 18, with a craft session after the reading.
Storytime will take a break after this week, but will resume June 5 during the summer months. Please note that Storytime will meet on Tuesdays during this time.
